What are your tuition fees?

Bachelors courses: The Fee Calculator on the right indicates the tuition fees that are applicable to your situation, whether you are a future student or already enrolled in a Bachelors course at HAN. Please answer the questions as they relate to you.

You can use the following amounts as a general indication of the tuition fees to be paid for one academic year.

  • € 1771 for EU/ EER citizens (Provided you have not yet obtained a Bachelors degree in Dutch Higher Education. And you live, at the official starting time of the academic year, in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg or in one of the German federal states North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), Bremen or Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen)?
  • € 7000 for Non-EU/EER citizens

Masters courses: Tuition fees vary for the Masters courses. Please refer to the Apply now page of the Masters course you are interested in.

Monthly costs

The EIU¡¯s latest Worldwide Cost of Living Survey shows that the cost of living in Amsterdam is modest compared to cities like New York, London, Paris and Beijing. The cost of living in Arnhem or Nijmegen is even cheaper than in the capital city.

Experience shows that to live and study in the Netherlands for one year costs a student between € 700 and € 1,100 euro a month. This amount is needed to cover daily expenses, to pay rent, and for tuition fees.

You cannot rely on finding a source of additional income after your arrival. The institutions have very limited funds for supporting students. If you are from an EU or EEA member state, however, you may be entitled to a regular student grant or to a refund of the tuition fees. For specific information, contact the DUO-IB-Group .

If you have an average student income ¨C from a scholarship, for example ¨C you will find that one third of it will go towards housing. Food might cost you another third. Fortunately, most higher education institutions offer hot meals at reasonable prices. Many cities have pubs (eetcaf¨¦¡¯s) where you can eat cheaply and well. But the cheapest way to eat is to do your own cooking. The remaining third of your money will go towards books, travel, and other expenses.

Citizen Service Number and income tax

Whether or not a foreign national has to pay income tax on a scholarship or salary depends on the bilateral agreements between your home country and the Netherlands. It is advisable to discuss your individual situation with your local tax office. The following are general rules that might be helpful.

In order to work in the Netherlands you need a Citizen Service Number (Burger Servicenummer or, in short, BSN). This number means you are registered in the tax and social security system. When registering with your local municipality, you are automatically issued a BSN. Your local town hall will most likely send you a letter to confirm all your personal details listed in their administration. This letter will also mention your BSN. More information about BSN.

If you work in paid employment, your employer will deduct social security contributions and tax from your wage and pay these amounts to the proper authorities. You also have to lodge a tax return each year.

For more information and the addresses of tax offices (Belastingdienst) phone 0800 0543 (from the Netherlands) or +31 555 38 53 85 (from abroad).
